We are appealing for your support to enable us build a hostel for the inmates/residents at the Leprosy Centre at Okija.
Key facts:

  • It is widely believed that leprosy as a public health problem has been eliminated. However, according to official reports by the WHO from 121 countries and territories including Nigeria, there was a prevalence of 213,036 of cases of leprosy at the beginning of 2008. The number of new cases detected stood at 249,007. Although the number of new cases detected globally fell by 4% in 2008 compared with 2007, there is an indication that the disease has not been completely eradicated in certain parts of the world and Nigeria is one of those places. Considering that there is no welfare system in Nigeria, the plight of these people is unimaginable.

  • The inmates at the Centre are already deformed, disabled, ostracised and stigmatised by their families and society in general. This is where the ICA has focused its interest. The Okija Leprosy Centre which houses inmates from the above towns within the ICA or Ihiala Local Government area and its environs is in a terrible state of disrepair.

  • Your generous support during our 1st sponsored walk on Sunday 9 September 2012, will assist tremendously in realising our dream in building an 11 bedroom hostel, dispensary /Chapel for the inmates/residents of the Centre. Your kind and generous donation will in no small way help to alleviate the plight of these unfortunate people. Thanking you in anticipation.

  • Cheques to be made payable to Ihiala Community Association.
